Family Table

Almost two months ago Scott and I made a quick day trip to the Amish Country to scour furniture stores looking for the best way to spend our income tax return. (When you get two kids in one year, its a nice return.) We already had an idea of what we wanted, because we're like minded and feel the need to discuss big purchases extensively, I also like to research before I buy. After visiting 5 or 6 stores and eating a lunch of cheese samples we decided on a nine foot table with 10 chairs, 4 stools for our island and one stool for our desk area. We bought our furniture from Country Furniture and Book Store. About a year and a half ago we bought a rocking chair for Keller the store is small and has a small selection of Sunday School materials. We saw a few Amish families in the store actually buying furniture and books, when you see that you know the store is a good place to spend your money. The rocking chair has held up wonderfully, doesn't have a scratch and the finish is still smooth and nice.

We are very pleased with our table, it fills our dinning room out nicely, and I'm glad to be rid of the plastic folding table we were using. Did I describe the table enough... its a boat shape (the ends are slightly tapered) and its made of maple with a light stain to match our cabinets. The chairs have a half lumbar support and the table, chairs and stools are all a Shaker style, very plain and simple. I think our cabinets are a Shaker style too.

Big table, with Victor and Scarlett at the very end. Don't they look teeny?

The delivery men got lost on another delivery and we weren't able to eat dinner Monday night, but we enjoyed eating on our back deck for the first time. Good thing the weather was beautiful.

Victor and Scarlett did get to eat their bedtime snacks on the new table that evening.

These plates suction cup to the table, pretty fantastic. With Keller I never bought things like this, but I was always around to catch his plate before he dumped it, now thats not always possible.

Tuesday night we enjoyed our first family meal where we all sat around a table together. No high chairs, enough chairs and space for everyone. Wonderful. It may seem like a small thing to be excited over, eating dinner together, but when you're used to eating a rushed dinner so you can get to work, or stealing bites while your standing up to feed others, its so nice to be able to relax and appreciate everything you've been given. Scott and I have spent the last week in wonderment at the relaxed feeling we've had.

I know in a year I'll be so amazed at how we used to function, dinner time used to be rushed with Keller eating at the table by himself, Scott on the couch talking to his parents about what to get done that evening or weekend and me feeding the twins while standing and holding a plate for myself. Eventually I will forget how I felt during those times, but I'll always have this blog to remind me how grateful I feel now. Thanks for reading and hopefully enjoying this exciting time in my family's life.
